Turbo & Exhaust

The stock turbo can go a long way in making HP. I was able to go 11.50 @ 117.24 with a stock, unmodified turbo at 20# boost, upgraded elbow, a home-made DP, pictured below, 3" exhaust, 36# BlueTop injectors and no clue how to tune this beast.

I am sure it could have gone quicker with more boost and better tuning but being new to this setup, 20# boost sounded scary so I decided to upgrade to a more efficient turbo. The DP was simply sections of 3" mandrel mild steel welded together and connected to the flange that bolts up to the elbow. It, along with the turbo shield was ceramic-coated.

The stock turbo was upgraded to a PTE-51 from Precision Turbo & Engine and is rated to support 585hp. These are unique to the Buick V-6 and have a patented high-efficiency exhaust housing. At this stage I was using the Bowling Green turbo elbow which is physically bigger and supposed to flow more. However, I had problems with the puck alignment and spoolup was non-existent with the new turbo. Picked up 5+mph but ET ranged from 11.38 to 11.99 because it took at about 330' to spool up.

Below you can see pics of the BG elbow with a stocker for comparison. Impressive looking but it never worked for me. I decided to upgrade to the popular Terry Houston Downpipe (THDP).

Needed to use the THDP for the Turbo TransAM because the bend for the Turbo Regal was too wide to fit the engine bay. Only a short section was used and a mandrel 3" pipe was made to complete the downpipe. This immediately woke the car up and before long it was down to 11.20s, mid-1.60s 60' with a best of 1.55 on BFG DRs. To date, the most impressive mod on this setup. Do not envision needing to make any turbo/exhaust upgrades for a long time.
